PiGutNet – A European network on the factors affecting the gastro-intestinal microbial balance and the impact on the health status of pigs. The network is supported by the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020.
The “hoped for” reduction in the use of antibiotics in pigs by EU producers has not materialized as they are still being widely used for the control of enteric infectious diseases. This practice can spread antibiotic resistance in the farm environment and poses a threat to consumer health. Whilst it is widely recognized that a diversified gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) microbiota is essential for optimal health and performance, the underlying factors favouring the development and maintenance of a balanced intestinal microbiota are not yet fully understood. PiGutNet is the first European network focused on this topic, joining specialists in all research areas.
The meeting in Brno featured focused working group sessions along with plenary sessions summarising research progress. The meeting also featured an enjoyable social program including a social dinner and excursion to the one of Brno’s most scientific and historically important locations, the Mendelianum Muzeum.
