The 6th International Symposium on Childhood MDS and Bone Marrow Failure syndromes was held November 7-9, 2012 in Prague, Czech Republic, and the symposium was hosted by Prof. Dr. Jan Starý, University Hospital Motol, Prague. The European Working Group of MDS and JMML in Childhood (EWOG-MDS) has initiated multiple cooperative studies on diagnosis and therapy of childhood myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). Since 1996 EWOG-MDS has organized five international symposiums in Titisee (D), Funen (DK), Stresa (I), Freiburg (D) and Rotterdam (NL) reflecting the enormous progress achieved during the last 20 years in the field of childhood MDS and JMML. Realizing the need for an international cooperative effort in the field of acquired aplastic anemia the European Working Group of Severe Aplastic Anemia (EWOG-SAA) was founded in 2007 and since has worked in close collaboration with EWOG-MDS.
Following the 5th international symposium held in Rotterdam the scientific focus has been widened and inherited and acquired bone marrow failures were included.
Over 200 people from 30 countries participated in the 6th symposium in Prague. One hundred one abstracts were submitted; 29 oral and 72 poster presentations were held during the Symposium. In addition, there were 13 lectures of invited speakers.
The symposium was a great success and demonstrated recent progress in research and clinical practice in MDS and bone marrow failures, including newly identified diseases such as GATA2 deficiency.
