European experts on therapeutic drug monitoring met in Prague for the first time.

Prague, the 3rd of September 2014: Experts from the field of toxicology met in the Diplomat Hotel Prague for the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Conference, which was held from the 28th-30th of August and hosted almost 250 participants. The presidential post was pleaded by Prof. Milan Grundmann, M.D., Ph.D., head of the department of pharmacology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Ostrava.

Amongst the most important conference professors were Folke Sjöqvist, Pierre Marquet or Roger Jelliffe. This was the very first year of the conference and it was organised by the Czech Society for Clinical Pharmacology in collaboration with the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology.

Individual pharmacology is increasingly coming to the forefront in the field of clinical pharmacology. Its uniquess lies mainly within the accurate measurment of drug concentration in the patients' blood. The key role is played by the drugs whose therapeutic range is narrow, and therefore can lead to overdose or a severe lack of medicine, respectively with patients who have specific requirements or with diseases that require highly accurate dosages of medicine. Therapeutic drug monitoring ensures that the effectiveness and safety of the administration of concrete drugs to the patients will be as high and as safe as possible. The main theme of the conference was the individual pharmacology in traditional and new areas of application, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding women or seniors.

Participants from many European countries attended not only the rich, professional programme, but also social events. A part of the social programme was gala dinner and a tour of Prague with a guide.

Czech Society for Clinical Pharmacology is a professional society working on the development of clincal pharmacology in the Czech Republic. Its members are, in addition to doctors, medical workers, pharmacists and other specialists who are involved in the training of doctors in this field.
