Experts on biomechanics met in Prague for the first time.

The 21st Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB) was held at Clarion Congress Hotel Prague, from the 5th to the 8th of July, 2015. Prof. Svatava Konvičková, the Head of the Czech Society of Biomechanics, the organising insitution, says: „Despite the long tradition of biomechanical research in the Czech Republic, Prague has never been a venue neither for the ESB nor for the International Society of Biomechanics congress. We are more than happy to finally manage it.“

The European Society of Biomechanics was founded in 1976 at a meeting in Brussels of 20 scientists from 11 countries. The goal was to encourage research, disseminate knowledge and promote progress in biomechanics. It is now the largest biomechanics society in Europe with over 1000 members.

The annual meeting has been designed to provide an innovative and comprehensive overview of the latest research in various branches of biomechanics.

This year´s congress brought members of the Czech Society of Biomechanics and scientists from the Czech Technical University in Prague and the Charles University to Prague with support of C-IN, the professional congress organiser. The Czech Society of Biomechanics, founded in 1981, is an affiliate group of the International Society of Biomechanics and currently holds more than 150 members.

Biomechanics develops interdisciplinary knowledge. Its aplications is used in many disciplines -  medicine (biomechanics of the cardio-vascular system and of musculo-skeletal system), automobile industry (motor control, vehicle safety system) and biology (biomechanics of cell and subcellar structures, animal biomechanics) and others.

Along with 3 days of lectures and symposias, the congress programme consisted of precourses on variation of biomechanical topics - Short Course on Tissue Engineering; Combined experimental and modelling approach to clinical applications; Evaluation of implant stability; Custom made implants design and clinical application.

Plenary lectures were delivered by Jacob Klein (Weizmann Institute of Science). His interests in soft matter have ranged from the dynamics and interfacial properties of polymers to the behaviour of confined fluids and biological lubrication. Jeffrey A. Weiss (University of Utah) and Marcus Pandy (University of Melbourne) focuse on combining biomechanical experiments and computational modelling to describe and explain musculoskeletal function in healthy, injured and diseased states.

The scientific programme was accompanied by a rich social programme. The very special meeting „Woman in Science Breakfast“ offered a timely discussion of issues facing women in the biomechanics and engineering professions as a predominant man´s field. The great success was the “Night in town”, an ESB tradition aimed at young colleagues. It is the ideal opportunity to socialise with fellow students of biomechanics and exchange experiences and ideas. The congress dinner allowed all delegates to enjoy Prague’s picturesque atmosphere in Pilsner Restaurant in the Municipal House.

The complete ESB program, both scientific and social, required high quality services. The C-IN team is honored to have been able to help make the first congress on biomechanics in Prague visited by 535 delegates from 41 countries around Europe.

Technological development is unstoppable and an integral part of the work of the C-IN team is the monitoring of current trends and their use in practice. We were personally introduced to a new development in the mobile industry last week during a short workshop by Jelmer van Anst, founder and CEO of the Dutch company called Conference Compass. Just as is states in the name itself, their main product is a mobile application designed for international associations not only at the time of their regular conferences.
